As someone who has been somewhat abreast with the developments in the metropolis, the Urban Roamer knows all too well the travails of Mercato Centrale with its several attempts to establish itself in the Makati CBD area. There was the food truck concept at Glorietta 1 Park to the one at the carpark rooftop to the one inside Glorietta mall itself, all of them eventually fizzled out. Now Mercato Centrale is making another attempt to establish themselves in Makati, this time at the Glorietta 4 Park. There are no fancy concepts, just the straight-old Mercato experience folks have come to love known as the Mercato @ Glorietta.
Mi BellySima at Glorietta
There’s something about Mercato Centrale and its ventures in the Makati CBD area that do not seem to last that long. I dunno but it seems the folks behind Mercato have yet to find that formula for success in this part of the city that it has been enjoying in its homebase at the Bonifacio Global City as well as in its Mezza Norte venture in Quezon City, which is a shame since there were some innovative concepts involved. Nevertheless, that has not stopped them from trying to capture that elusive Makati area market as it has recently unveiled its new venture there, the BellySima.
A Rooftop Food Trip
Of the things you can do at a building rooftop…come to think of it, there’s not much you can do at a building rooftop unless you put something there. Which is probably the thinking the folks of Mercato Centrale and Ayala Center had when they decided to put a weekly food market at the rooftop of a carpark building there. With that, the rooftop of The Link carpark building has become the new home of Cucina Andare, the food night market of Makati conceptualized by the same folks behind Mercato Centrale et al.
The Mercatos of the Metro
There are a number of food/weekend markets out there in the metro these days. Some may say this growing presence is bordering on oversaturation, while others do not seem to mind that. Especially if they have something different to offer for a discriminating palate. Then there are a few that stand out thanks to longevity and loyal patronage among a growing fanbase. Out of that few, there are those that have stood up well enough to establish by itself a growing network of food markets in the metropolis. Such is the success story of Mercato Centrale.
